For congressional hopeful Kathy Manning, the past three months has been full of good news.

It started in December when she announced her candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in North Carolina’s 13th District. Since then, she has leveraged $530,000 in campaign donations, been added to the House Democratic “Red to Blue” program and appeared on the cover of Time magazine.

Today, she’ll reach another milestone when she is endorsed by Emily’s List.

“I’ve been amazed and humbled by the excitement everywhere I’ve gone,” Manning said about her campaign. “The enthusiasm everywhere I’ve gone, from people all across the district, has just been incredible.”

The 13th District seat is currently held by Republican Rep. Ted Budd, who is seeking re-election.

Manning will face Adam Coker and Beniah McMiller in the Democratic primary for the chance to challenge Budd.

Emily’s List is the nation’s largest resource organization for women in politics. Its name is an acronym for “Early Money Is Like Yeast.”

How so? Founder Ellen R. Malcom said it pointedly: “It makes the dough rise.”

Since 1985, Emily’s List has helped raise more than $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women. The organization recruits and trains candidates, researches issues that affect women and families, and works to turn out women voters.

Emily’s List has supported the campaigns of 116 women elected to the U.S. House, 23 to the Senate, 12 as governors, and more than 800 to state and local offices. Forty percent of those candidates have been women of color.

According to the organization’s website, Emily’s List endorses only candidates that its staff feels can “make it across the finish line with the help of our national community.”

Manning’s campaign checks many of the boxes that Emily’s List tries to fill.

A former immigration attorney, Manning left the major law firm where she had been a partner for 16 years to start her own practice. Since then, she has worked to support school readiness programs for vulnerable children, to help students access higher education and to help seniors.

Emily’s List President Stephanie Schriock said the organization is proud to support Manning’s candidacy.

Manning was a driving force behind a new performing arts center in Greensboro. She was the first woman to lead one of the largest charitable organizations in the world, the Jewish Federations of North America, where she helped people who lost their jobs during the Great Recession gain access to food, health care, mortgage assistance and job retraining.

“Kathy has taken on tough challenges and improved the lives of those around her,” Schriock said. “It’s time that she bring her considerable talents to Congress.”
